FAQs - Motor cruiser insurance

Here are some of the questions we are often asked. If you can’t find the answer to your question, please call us and talk to our helpful, RYA trained team.

If my stern drive is damaged hitting a submerged object, am I covered, and is the excess doubled?

You would be covered as our policy covers damage to underwater gear. Your normal policy excess will apply.

Can I moor my craft anywhere?

You must advise us of your craft’s permanent mooring location and we will advise you if it is acceptable. You should not leave you craft moored and unattended off an exposed beach or shore.

If a passenger is injured whilst on board am I covered if he claims against me?

You will be covered for claims against you by passengers up to the policy limit of £3m. There is also personal accident cover for the policyholder and passengers aboard the craft.

Am I covered to tow my boat behind my car?

If your boat is less than 30 feet (9 metres) in length, normal policy cover will apply. You must observe security conditions if the craft is left unattended on a journey. Damage or injury to other persons when the boat is attached is covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle. Please notify us if you require transit cover for craft over 30 feet.

Do I get a discount for keeping my boat in a marina?

We will charge a lower rate if your boat is in a marina. We will also give you “Marina benefits” which means that if your boat is damaged on its permanent mooring there is no excess to pay and your no claims discount will not be affected.
