Rigid inflatable insurance

FAQ - RIB insurance and rigid inflatable boat insurance

Here are some of the questions we are often asked about RIB insurance. If you can’t find the answer to your question, please call us and talk to our helpful, RYA trained team.

Is the tube covered against punctures?

Yes, if the cause is accidental and not through wear and tear.

Am I covered to tow my RIB behind my car?

If your RIB is less than 30 feet (9 metres) in length, normal policy cover will apply. You must observe security conditions if the craft is left unattended on a journey. Damage or injury to other persons when the boat is attached is covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle. Please notify us if you require transit cover for craft over 30 feet.

My policy says I am covered to use my RIB in UK coastal waters. How far offshore can I go?

You are covered to the 12 mile limit. However you can be more than 12 miles offshore if you are travelling between two points on the mainland.

Does my outboard need a lock?

Yes, in order for theft to be covered your outboard needs to be secured to the transom by a locking device.

My craft is fitted with a "kill cord" should I use it all the time?

Yes. You will have no cover if you fail to attach your kill cord. Serious injury can be avoided if the engine can be cut if the occupants are thrown from the craft.
